Painting the Familiar: Objects in oil
with Victoria Reichelt
Victoria Reichelt studied Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art, graduating in 2005 having completed her Doctor of Visual Arts. She has been short-listed for a number of major art prizes including Still, National Still Life Award 2025, the Gold Award at the Rockhampton Art Gallery, the RBS Emerging Artist Award, the Fletcher Jones Art Prize, and in 2013 she won the Sulman Art Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She has been awarded an Australia Council New Work Grant and the Linden Innovators Award from the Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation and at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane, and she has served as a board member on the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council for the Arts.
Victoria’s most recent series Batch reimagines the Pop Art tradition of cake imagery from an intimate, lived‑in perspective, placing the viewer deep inside the sensory world of the kitchen. Through hyper-detailed, exuberant cakes the works explore the pleasures, pressures, and time-consuming rituals of parenthood. Together, they celebrate the maximal, messy sweetness of raising children while acknowledging what is temporarily set aside.
Victoria is represented by Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane, Qld.
