Daniel von sturmer: limits of the model (sequence 3)

28 Feb – 19 Apr 2026

Daniel von Strumer’s Limits of the Model (Sequence 3), approaches paint as an event unfolding in time. In this video work, the slow drip of black and white paint becomes both subject and process. The camera observes the behaviour of the material as it traces a contrasting path down a vertical surface, eventually transforming it into a flat field of tone, ready for its inverse colour to do the same. What might initially read as painterly abstraction is revealed as a study of physical properties, perception and the ways images are formed through observation.

Limits of the Model (Sequence 3) is supported by Metal Manufactures and Haymans Electrical and Data Suppliers through partnership with the National Gallery of Australia’s Regional Initiatives Program.
