Ben Hedström – ‘Allisions’

An ‘allision’ occurs when a moving object strikes a stationary one. It is chiefly a nautical term, however it takes on different resonance given Ben Hedström’s paintings largely take place by the sea. Hedström’s describes the relevance as follows:

“The encounter between the visceral experience of a landscape and its cerebral resonance gives rise to a unique phenomenon—an ‘allision.’ This pivotal moment occurs when one’s being aligns aesthetically, sensually, and emotionally with the stationary object—the landscape. This signifies the genesis of a transformative journey, wherein a profound connection is forged, leading to a deeper understanding of one’s authentic self.”

This exhibition brings together a collection of encounters along the edge of the ocean on the Sunshine Coast.

About the Artist

Ben Hedström’s is an award-winning contemporary Australian artist based on the Sunshine Coast. His work explores the materiality of painting through alla prima and impasto oil techniques, producing textured, luminous artworks that balance gesture with formal compositional elements.

This activity space is for visitors of all ages.

What to do:

Take a close look at the colours in the paintings and notice the intricate details and the beautiful hues that bring Hedström’s paintings to life.

Select coloured tissue paper that matches the shades in the artwork. Play with colours layering the tissue sheets and see how they interact.

Scrunch up the tissue, add glue to the back and attach it to the collage.
